Compatibility & Legacy Software

Check region, edition and version before you order, and understand what legacy QuickBooks Desktop can and cannot do in the UK.

Check these four things before you buy

1. Region

Every edition we sell is the UK Edition. Intuit states that UK and Irish company files are not compatible with versions from other regions, such as US, Canadian or Australian editions. If your file was created in a non-UK version, these products are not the right fit.

2. Edition

Choose the edition your file was last used with: Pro, Premier or Accountant. You can usually see this in QuickBooks under Help > About QuickBooks, or by pressing F2 to open the Product Information window.

3. Version and older company files

These are 2020 releases. When a newer QuickBooks Desktop version opens a file from an older version, it normally asks to update the file, and an updated file generally cannot then be opened in the older version again. Always make a backup copy first.

If your file was last used in a version newer than 2020, contact us before ordering.

4. Your computer

QuickBooks Desktop runs on Windows PCs only; it does not run on Mac. If you are unsure whether your computer is suitable, ask us before you order.

Support status

Intuit discontinued QuickBooks Desktop for UK customers. According to Intuit, all UK Desktop services, including support, ended on 30 June 2023, and development and updates for UK and Irish versions ended on the same date. This means no security updates or fixes from the publisher.

Rocket Accounting is an independent seller and is not affiliated with Intuit. Our help covers your order, the delivery email and the instructions we send. We cannot provide publisher support, repair company files or restore services Intuit has withdrawn.

Making Tax Digital for VAT

QuickBooks Desktop cannot be used to submit MTD VAT returns. Intuit reports that HMRC stopped accepting MTD for VAT submissions from all versions of QuickBooks Desktop from 7 April 2024. If you are VAT registered you will need separate MTD-compatible software, or suitable bridging software, to file returns.

Services that depend on Intuit

Do not rely on services that need Intuit’s servers, such as payroll updates, bank feeds or online backup.

Moving away from Desktop

Intuit’s guidance describes migrating to QuickBooks Online through its conversion partner, or exporting your lists, invoices and reports to another system. Read Intuit’s UK QuickBooks Desktop discontinuation page for the current options.
